October 14, 1869. 168 In seheZ' lJ! nl £ m (Hz * p A t I < < BpL-— * , '■ at m : &* -I^TOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that an jj\ application was, on the twenty-second day of October, 1869, made to His Excellency the Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, 'by John Oieew and Edwabd Cabtee, of Porirua, in the Province of Wellington, praying for a grant to them, the said John Chew and Edward Carter, of Letters Patent under the seal of the said Colony for the exclusive use, advantage, and enjoyment of a new invention to separate and obtain the fibre from the leaf of the New Zealand Flax (Phormivm tmax), and from all cuticle and gummy matter, by means of pressure and passing the leaf between several sets of rollers, and in the passage from one set of rollers to another ejecting from pipes upon the leaf either cold or warm water, or water and steam,- the water being either, pure or mixed with alkali.
