S.S. Star of the South.
The s.s. Star of the South left Auckland on Tuesday last, at midnight, and, after experiencing strong S.W. winds across the Bay of Plenty, rounded the East Cape at 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Thence had strong southerly winds and heavy head sea, and took shelter at Wangawehi at 8 p.m. on Thursday. Left again at 3 a.m. on Friday ; had a strong souther and heavy sea until rounding Portland Island, thence fine weather with heavy swell, and anohored in the roadstead at 4 p.m. same day, entering the Iron Pot at noon on Saturday last. Captain Bendall reports that the schooner Colonist, bound south, bore up for shelter on Thursday morning, off Gable End Foreland. The favorite cattle steamer Star of the South left this port on Sunday last for Auckland, with a full oargo of cattle for the Auokland market. Great credit is due to the Customs authorities and agents for the quick despatch of this vessel, though it is to be greatly deplored that we have not a diggings of our own for the consumption of our surplus stock. Week after week this vessel per* severingly carries away both sheep and cattle, which, in the event of a diggings, must of a necessity raise the price of meat here,
