Toll-Gate. — Tenders will be received till this morning for leasing the Toll-gate for the remaining term of the financial year. St. Patrick's Day. — The Napier Brass Band have been assiduously practising in anticipation of St. Patrick's day in the morning. A Provincial Government Gazette, published yesterday, contains a valuable report by the Inspector of Sheep, and a return of land sales for October. Schools. —We understand that, in course of another day or two, the Provincial Treasurer will be in a position to pay to teachers the first quarter of arrears due them under the Education Act. Waiboa. — It will be seen from intelligence received and published in another column, that Felix Goulet and family, of Wairoa, narrowly escaped losing their lives on Sunday last, and that there is some reason to fear two friendly natives have been shot by Hauhaus in the vicinity. Meteorological. — At all the southern stations yesterday a very high barometer was indicated, varying from 30.10 to 30.29, with calms and fine weather. In Napier the mercury is also very high, indicative, very likely, of another easterly gale, with its usual accompaniments of heavy rain and flooded rivers. Hopata, the Ngatiporou chief, has, we understand, been gazetted a Major of militia. While it is really a matter of sorrow to see the endless creation of officers that now fill the pages of the New Zealand Gazette, it will be admitted that Ropata, unlike some distinguished officers we could name, has really done something to merit the honor.
