GrABOTTEBS TO BE WHIPPED. — It will be seen by our report of the criminal proceedings at the Supreme Court yesterday that his Honor has determined, fo mark his sense of the brutal assaults that are being constantly committed, ur our "midsfc by midnight marauders. These robberies attended with garotting have been more frequent at the Thames than at Auckland, but we trust that the nature of the punishment ordered to be inflicted will have a deterrent effect upon our criminal population in their brutal attacks upon unoffending citizens. Three prisoners were sentenced to receive in addition to long senitenqes of penal servitude, 20 lashes upon their backs with the instrument called the oat. — Southern Gross, March 9.
