New Insolvent.— Mr. J. H. Sebley, of ' Waipawa, has filed his schedule. This Day. — Mr. E. Lyndon will sell, 1 tbis day, a quantity of furniture and other valuables, the property of a gentleman " leaving the colony. Also, fruit, &c. The Toll Gate. — Mr. Boddington " having fallen greatly in arrear of his payI, ments to the Provincial Treasurer, tenders ■ are invited for leasing the toll-gate to the end of June. 1 Hikdtoto Block.— We understand that i Mr. Locke has, been named by the Pro- | vincial Government as arbitrator on their i behalf to value such of the Hikutoto sections as have been applied for. * ■• •*'.■"" Suicide. — A melancholy case of suicide occurred on the night of Monday last, a . man named Alfred Gentles, formerly of the 70th regiment, having deliberately hung , himself from the branch of a gum tree near the barracks. The proceedings at the inquest on the body are reported iv another column. Rangiaho and Nikora, who, according to generally received report, were killed at Ngatapa, are now said, upon what seems very fair authority, to be alive and well. The former was a well known Uriwera chief; and, for what was assumed to be the head of the latter, Mr. Richmond paid a bonus of £50 ! Mr. Hamlin, however, who saw the head, is positive it was that of Nikora. New Motive Power. -— J. Hammond, Meanee flat, has for some time been churning by water power — J. Smith, of the Meanee having, very ingeniously, constructed a water wheel in connection with Hammond's artesian well, which answers admirably. We understand that, following tbe same example, G. Rymer is about to apply his newly acquired water power to tbe driving of a chaff cutting machine. Even with hard times, enterprise is not altogether dead in our little community. Poverty Bay Land Claims. — A proclamation in a New Zealand Gazette dated the 14th inst., recites that, by deed bearing date the eighteenth day of December, one thousand eight hundred and sixtyeight, tbe loyal portion of the Aitangamahaki and Rongowbakaata tribes, and of the bapu of Ngaitahupo, ceded all their lands within certain boundaries therein described to the Crown ; and whereas it is by the said deed stipulated, on tbe part of the Crown, that, subject to tbe terms of the said deed, those loyal persons whose claims to land within the said boundaries shall have been lodged on or before the eighteenth day of March, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-nine, shall have such claims adjudicated upon by a Commission of Judges of tbo Native Lands Court ; and announces the appointment of John Rogan, Esq., and Henry Alfred Monro, Esq., being Judges of the Native Lands Court aforesaid, to make inquiry into all such claims as aforesaid, and to ascertain whether the claimants making the same have done any of the things described in the fifth section of "The New Zealand Settlements Act, 1863," and further to make enquiry into the character of certain purchases, and gifts of land within the said boundaries alleged to have been made by and to Europeans. Full powers for that purpose are given to the Commission. ' Local Manufactures.-— We had much pleasure iv inspecting the other day a winnowing machine which has just been manufactured by Messrs Marsh Brothers, at their factory, next to the Odd Fellows' Hal]. It is in orery way equal to those of English, make, and contaius five sieves, two screens, and two shakers, all of which are worked by an improved universal joint. There arc also shoots for the waste corn (as well as the screened) to fall through. Messrs Marsh Brothers have likewise completed a thrashing machine, and, as will bo seen by their advertisement, they are prepared to thrash and winnow grain on the most reasonable terms. In an agricultural community like this it is a great advantage to have settlers amongst its who can manufacture their own machines, as it will tend to keep much money in tho place that otherwise would havo to be sent away.—lVwanaki Herald;
