Lieut.-Coi.onbi, Lambert took his departure for Wairoa on the night of Friday last, by the s.s. St. Kilda. Pukbtapu. — Divine Service will (D.V.) be held next Sunday, at 3 p.m., by the Rev. G-. Morice. Silver Challenge Cup.— We remind members of the Club that this cup will be fired for on Thursday next at 2 o'clock. Bazaar. — The Church of England bazaar has been postponed from Monday, the Ist March, to Thursday and Friday, the 4th and sth. Captain Newlands, to take command at Poverty Bay, arrived on Friday night by the Bruce, and immediately proceeded on by the St. Kilda. Taranaki Almanac— We have to accknowledge receipt of the Taranaki book Almanac for 1869, a most creditably compiled and printed little volume. Lieut. Gascoigne, mentioned in the list of persons massacred at White Cliffs, is, we believe, brother to the Lieut. Gascoigne so well known in connection with the war on the East Coast. . Ordination Service. — An ordination service will be conducted, next Lord's day, at St. John's churcb, by the Right Rev. the Bishop of Waiapu. The Rev. Mr. Bates, a gentleman educated in Auckland, will, on that occasion, be inducted to the ministerial charge of Drury. The Bishop of Waiapu being now the only Bishop in the Northern Island, this duty necessarily devolves upon him. Education Rate versus Tolls. — When we hear of so much fuss in town over a payment of £l per annum for educational purposes, we marvel at the long suffering of the Meanee and other settlers in the vicinity of Napier, most of whom pay at the rate of £18 15s. to the collector at the toll-gate, without, so far as their experience yet goes, deriving any: material advantage from so exorbitant a tax. The Private Match between Mr. Maney's horse "The Count" and Mr. Baldwin's "Fenian," for £20 a side, came off on Saturday morning, at the usual ground. The Count (ridden by his owner) jumped off with the lead, and maintained ifethroughout, coming in a winner by rather better than a length. Fenian was ridden by James Hague, and a good many persons assembled to witness the sport. The Rev. John Whitely, whose name appears in the list of Europeans massacred at White Cliff, in the Province of Taranaki, was a well known Wesleyan missionary, whose services in New Zealand had extended over 85 years, and who had grown gray in ministering to the spiritual wants of the people by whom he has been barbarously murdered. He was a good man and faithful minister, and his loss will be much and generally deplored. . The Napier Races. — We have to correct an error in our last issue with regard to the entries for the races, which will be received, as per advertisement, at the Masonic Hotel, on Wednesday (to-morrow) at four o'clock. The letting of the booths and Grand Stand will be at Swan's Hotel, in the evening at 8 o'clock. The course has so far recovered the effects of the recent flood, tjiat the stewards have determined on receiving the entries at the usual time ; but, should a postponement be absolutely necessary, notice will appear in our issue of Saturday, Rivers Bill. — We remind those interested of the meeting to be held on Thursday next, at 3 o'clock, at Maney's hotel, for the purpose of considering the propriety of taking steps to get the Hawke's Bay Rivers Bill proclaimed for the Meanee and adjacent districts. We hope to see a good attendance. Whajtev.er differences of opinion there may be as to the proper remedy, there can be none as to the lamentable condition to which many of our fine flats have been reduced by recent floods, and the subject is one that should be freely discussed. Another Fire.— About 2 o'clock yesterday morning a building on the Spit, occupied occasionally by Capt. Sclion, and in which there was some flax and other miscellaneous articles, was discovered to be on lire. The discovery seems to have been made simultaneously by Hunt, the night j watchman, and by Mr. Harding of the 2Hmes r whose dwelling house was closely contiguous to the burning building. Fortunately, as at the fire in Hastings-street, there was little or no wind, abundance of water, and any number of willing hands 5 and the fire was confined to the premises in which it broke out. Under less favorable circumstances, however, it is fearful to contemplate the destruction that might have ensued. The police tbink that one of two or three loafers known to be hanging about, must have effected an entrance while drunk, lighted a pipe, and gone to sleep, only to awake in time to avoid the surrounding danger. The Advertiser says : — Two men of the Constabulary, who had been tried by Court; Martial at Napier for stealing, and sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment in ( Wellington gaol, arrived by the St. Kilda on Monday. As no wai'rant of committal accompanied them, and tho offence was committed at Turanganui, outsido the boundaries of this Province, the prison authorities and the police refused to receive them, and they have been, we believe, released. |
