Oub Native Allies at Ng-atepa. — We have no doubt that our men engaged in this affair have all fought well and clone their best, but we cannot banish from our minds the impression that this victory has been accomplished by the natives, and if so, we consider that more mention should have been made of their deeds of valour than is recorded in the Colonel's despatch. We know that natives fighting with our forces have complained of this before, aud Mete Kingi in the House of Representatives is reported to have said that tho Europeans genorally received the praise for what the Maoris did ; therefore Col. Whitmore might have thought worth his whilo to havo mentioned in his despatch who were the first to scale the palisading and enter the pah, instead of leaving it so vague that many imagine it was a victory gained by tho Col. through the assistance of Ropata and not by Ropata assisted by tho Colonel. — Taranaki Herald, Jan. 16.

Teleg-bavh to Wano-anui. — By an advertisement which appeared in our last issue our readers will have observed that tho telegraph to Wanganui is to proceed via tho West Coast, and not by the shortest route, through the Forty-milo Bush, branching off from Masterton, as was originally proposed. We understand that the reason for this was that tho Provincial Government stated their inability to assist the General Government in cutting tho necessary line, which would also suit ibr a road to Manawatu. It is difficult to say how much Masterton and the Wairarapa generally have lost by this. — Wadmrapct, Mmury, Jan. 15.
