WELLINGTON.
BY BLJECTRIO TULJSGRAPm [KSOM OUB OWN OOKEBSPONDBNT.] Tuesday, January 5. As H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh is now expected to arrive in New Zealand in March, His Excellency proposes to limit his stay in the south to three weeks. He takes his departure on the 10 th inst., per H.M.S. Challenger. Dr. Featherston returned to town last night. Capt. Smith, formerly Surveyor-General to the New Zealand Company, who arrived here in 1830, in the ship Cuba, died at Wairarapa yesterday. The Caledonian games on New Year's day have netted £60. Of this amount, half has been voted to Dr. Featherston, for the West Coast relief association, and half to Mr. M v Lean, for the relief of East Coast settlers. The Wanganui mail brings no news. A meeting of the New Zealand Steam Mail Company, convened to consider a proposition to reduce the capital by making the £10 shares £4, separated without coming to any conclusion, owing to the notice given being declared to be informal.
