Officers' Dbill. — In consequence of the deficient attendance of officers at drill, a circular has been issued requiring their attendance or resignation of commission. — Independent, Dec. 5. Wanganui Petition. — Six hundred and five " wives, mothers and daughters of Wanganui settlers" have sent to the Governor a petition to be forwarded to the Queen, which concludes : — " To avert the extinction of ourselves and those dearest to us under circumstances equal, if not exceeding the barbarities perpetrated in the Poverty Bay district, your memoralists humbly supplicate your Majesty to direct that the efforts of the loyal and well affected of this district and island be speedily supplemented by Imperial troops." Constabulary foe Napier. — The following officers and men of the Mounted Constabulaiy sailed on Thursday, from Wanganui for Napier, under the command of Colonel Whitmore, in the p.s. Sturt, and the s.s. Lady Bird, the latter having been chartered for the purpose : — No. 6 Division, Inspector Boberts, and 90 noncommissioned officers and men ; No. 3 Division, Captain Newland, Sub-Inspector Goring, and 50 non-commissioned officers and men ; No. 1 Division- Dismounted Cavalry, Major Eraser, and 45 non-com-missioned officers and men. Major St. John accompanied Colonel Whitmore. Lieut.-Colonel Herrick has been left in command of the force stationed at Woodall's Redoubt, which is garrisoned by the Ist class militia, and the Evening Herald asks, " why was not Major St. John left in charge." The embarkation was a scene of confusion, which was evidently undertaken without management and without order. — Independent, Dec. 5.
