NAPIER BRASS AND

Sib, — I understand it is the intention of the members of the Napier Brass Band to enrol themselves with the Napier Rifle Volunteers, as bandsmen. If such is the case, I say it is manifestly unjust, to say the least of iti I believe that in joining any particular company, they would be too much under the control of their officers, and it is quite possible that those officers might object to their playing for any other company. To avoid an occurrence of that kind, I would suggest that they should enrol themselves as bandsmen to the Hawke's Bay Volunteers, then they would not belong to any particular company, but to volunteer corps generally. Were they to carry out their intentions they would break faith, with, subscribers, and the object for which the money was raised would be entirely frustrated. I trust, sir, this letter will not be taken in bad spirit by any members of the band. I can assure them that my intention is to try and avert an evil that would surely follow were they act upon their intention of joining the Napier Rifle Volunteers. I hope it will not be thought I wish harm to the N.R.V. ; far from it, I hope they will flourish, and that other volunteer companies may be started here. — I am, &c, A Stjbsceibek. Napier, Sept. 7, 1868.
