GOLD AT WAITAKERE.

(Prom the " Southern Cross.") Authentic information was received ir town last evening to the effect that goldbearing quartz in large quantities had beer discovered in tbe Waitakere ranges, During the course of Saturday last, Mi Houston, a settler residing near to what was formerly known as Howard's publichouse, and about twelve miles from Auckland, was the bearer of some very rich . specimens of gold-bearing quartz to Dr. Aickin, of the Whau, who is known at the present moment to be deeply interested in auriferous drifts and deposits. Mr 1 Houston asserted that ho had met with : the quartz near his residence, and he had brought in the specimens to be tested. Upon Dr. Aickin complying with this request, he is stated to have been so well pleased with the result that he at once determined to visit the locality and inspect the spot for himself. He was accompanied by Mr Houston and Mr Edgecombe, hotelkeeper at the Whau, who has proved himself to be a practical and successful digger at the Thames goldfield. We stated in yesterday's paper that some quartz had been brought down a few days ago from Waitakere, . by Mr Hewson, a settler there, and had been submitted to Dr. Aickin, who was quite satisfied that it would pay well for crushing. Mr Hewson came into town again yesterday, bringing with him as much quartz as he could carry. There cannot be any doubt that this quartz was got at Waitakere, and we believe there is as little that it is> richly auriferous. Dr. Aickin will superintend the crushing and thorough testing of the quartz. We may add that it isTex'pected to yield fully ten ounces to the ton.
