Capt. Withers, as paymaster of the colonial forces, proceeds to Poverty Bay in the Waipara this day. Weigh Bridge, Eastern Spit.— Scaled tenders will be received till Tuesday, August 4, for leasing the Weighbridge at the Eastern Spit. The Rev. G. Morice has requested us to intimate that he will hold Divine Service at Petane next Sunday (to-morrow) afternoon. Capt. Rattray. — We regret to observe that Capt. Rattray, at one time well known in Napier, has been drowned in the neighborhood of Auckland, having fallen overboard from the cutter Maid of the Mill. Three Militia Prisoners were received by the Waipara, yesterday, charged with insubordination. Their offence, according to their own account, was that of refusing flour for rations, when they had no utensils or means of cooking it. Whatever it was, they were discharged upon arrival. The English Mails may be expected on Sunday next, by the s.s. Wellington, on her return trip from Auckland. We are glad to observe that the Chief Postmaster has, in consideration of the delay in the delivery of the mails, and with his usual attention to the interests of the public, given three additional hours on Monday for the posting of letters. The mail will not close therefore, till 2 o'clock on that day. The Late Floods, although higher by 3 or 4 inches at Tareha's Bridge than those of last year, have not been nearly so destructive. The height of the waters was justly ascribed to the Ngaruroro having overflowed, its banks at some distance up, the Karamu and adjoining localities having been partially submerged in consequence. The greatest individual loss we, have heard of is that of the Catholic mission, which has lost 300 sheep and 2 head of cattle. Neal and Close's loss did not exceed 50 sheep, and several other parties have lost to about an equal extent. A great part of the filling but the injury to public works generally has been insignificant. The recurrence of floods, of late, has caused very serious concern.
