A Government Land Sale will be held to-morrow (Wednesday.) Tenders for supplying the troops with bread are to be given in by to-morrow at noon. New Insolvent. — Mr. J. Kobottom has assigned his estate for the benefit of his creditors. The Bishop has requested us to state that he will conduct Divine service, next Lord's day, at Haveloek, at 1 1 a.m. Tenders go in this day for two road contracts on the main south road. Tenders are invited for re-metalling 40 chains on the north road. Napier Art Union. — Mr. Gowing intimates that the drawing will take place at the Masonic Hall, on Thursday next at half-past 3 o'clock. The Experimental Boring. — Work was resumed yesterday, but was confined to cleaning out the pipe, which was done thoroughly. Building Society. — A meeting for the receipt of subscriptions will take place on Thursday next ; and, on the same occasion, a further draw of shares will take place. His Excellency the Governor has been on a tour through the Waikato. Last evening, a grand ball was to be given by His Excellency and Lady Bowen to the citizens of Auckland. Post and Telegraph Office.-— lt will be seen from our advertising columns that tenders are invited for the erection of a Post and Telegraph office in Napier. The site, we understand, will be the angle of the government buildings reserve formed by the junction of Shakespeare-road and Browning-street. Later from Auckland. — The steamer from Auckland, due last evening, had not made her appearance at a late hour. Our Wellington exchanges, however, contain five days' later news from the north. Extracts will be found elsewhere, from which it will be seen that the reported alluvial diggings are a great reality. Dr. Hitchings and part of his family sustained some severe bruises on Sunday, through the bolting of a strange horse the doctor was driving in his buggy. Though all in the vehicle were much shaken, and one, a child, severely cut in the face, the injuries sustained are not, we are happy to say, likely to be serious. The Queen's Birth-day was observed yesterday as an almost universal holiday — few if any, places of business having been open. The shooting for the cup attracted the attention of some, while many, induced by the beauty of the weather, paid a visit to the country. The detachment of the 18th performed several evolutions, concluding by a feu dejoie, in honor of the occasion. Liberal Action. — Yesterday, the native chief Tarehix brought to town about 15 tons of potatoes, which he has handed over to the Superintendent and Mr. Sutton, as a present to the European inhabitants of Napier. Ifc is proposed that they shall be distributed, in lots of two kits to each family, among those who may be in want, on application to Mr. Sutton. The distribution, we understand, will commence this morning, and continue till Thursday evening at 6 o'clock. The Rain-fall to which we referred in Saturday's issue continued till Sunday morning. The fall was very heavy on Saturday night, and fears were generally entertained that another flood would be the result. Those fears, however, proved to be groundless. The river beds, it is true, were pretty full, more especially that ot the Meanee, but there was no overflow, and, Sunday and yesterday being fine, the waters fell rapidly. The rain has done much good, not only as (being accompanied by warm weather) giving an impetus to the growth of the young grass, but as clearing out and deepening the beds of the principal rivers. RoUTLEDGE, KENNEDY & Co. will Sell at the Meanee yards to-morrow, May 27, 50 head of cattle.
