I wbotb you in my last that I was much afraid that the mouth of our river would shortly be closed. It gives me much pleasure now to say that such an impression has, within the last few days, proved erroneous, for, instead of closing, the river has broken through the bank that had formed on the north spit, thereby opening a wider, deeper, and in every respect better .entrance than I have seen since my residMce in this place. I write this more particularly for the guidance of vessels that may intend visiting this port for the future. It was about a week ago that the cutter Grayling came as far as the Heads, with the intention, I believe, of entering the river, and could not get in ; but now, I can almost assert that there is sufficient water to allow any vessel drawing as much water as the St. Kilda to come in with
safety, for it is not only wide and deep, but straight, avoiding the ugly turn that it formerly had. have but one weekly mail from Napier to this place, and surely that ought at all events to be punctual in its arrival here, more especially so in this extraordinary fine weather; but such is not the case. Instead of getting our letters on Thursday at noon, we did not obtain .them until Friday morning, a few hours previous to the closing of the return mailj thereby precluding many the opportunity of answering correspondence that, might be of the utmost importance. But I really do not see how the service can be otherwise than inefficiently performed for the amount that' the present contractor , has undertaken to do it, viz., £140; but why-should the public be made to suffer because ft person undertakes to perform duties for a stipulated sum, which *|£may,or may not remunerate him, and fails -in executing it ? Any contractor for public, service ought to be made to fulfil the duties required of him by the strictest interpretation of the contract.
