Embarkation of AumedConsta'bulaky for Hokitika. — About four o'clock on Tuesday evening sixty-seven of the Armed Constabulary from Patea, under the. command of Lieut.-Colonel McDonnell, Inspector Cummins, and Inspector George McDonnell, marched into Wanganui, headed by the Town Board, who patriotically volunteered their services. The men were at once marched to the wharf and embarked on board the Colonial Government steamer, St. Kilda, which was awaiting their arrival. Here a little episode, worthy of remark, took place. It appears that when orders arrived for the departure, of the men for Hokitika, Mrs. Colonel McDonnell hastily prepared a flag to present them with previous to their departure She now surprised the Colonel by appearing on the poop of the St. Kilda with the flag. The men were called aft, and, in the presence of their officers and some gentlemen visitors who happened to be present, had the flag presented to them with an injunction that they Mould heroically protect it, do their duty to their country, and bring the Colonel safe back to Wanganui. * The flag was received with vociferous cheers, and Captain Fox at once moved off his vessel from the whai*f and anchored in the centre of the river, purposing to leave at three o'clock yesterday morning. Previous to that hour, a breeze sprung up which rendered it dangerous to attempt to cross the bar. At one p.m. yesterday the pilot at the heads signalled that no steamer could cross the bar, so the St. Kilda lies waiting a chance to get out, — Wo/ngamii Times, April 2.
