Billiards. — An announcement to be found in another column will be read with interest by admirers of the favorite game of billiards. It will bo seen that Mr. W. C. Hitchen is expected from Lyttelton today, and will play a game of 1000 up in the lower billiard room at the Empire Hotel. He is spoken of as being, with the exception of .Roberts, the best player who has ever visited New Zealand, his great point being steadiness of play under every circumstance. His losing hazards are said to be perfect, his all-round-the-table cannons beautiful, his spot strokes good, and his whole style of such a nature as to win the admiration of all lovers of the game. Unfortunately engagements on the West Coast, and the necessity of an almost immediate return to Melbourne make it incumbent on the "Australian Champion" only to remain one night in this city. He has been induced with great difficulty by our enterprising follow citizen, Mr. Osgood, to play this evening, and we trust that his famed skill and the enterprise of mine host of the Empire will induce all who can to visit him. The champion's opponent is not yet appointed. — Indepetictent, Feb. 22.
