NELSON.
Our (Independent) files are to the 6th inst. — The Provincial Council is now sitting, having met on the 11th June. The prominent question now before it is the construction of a railway from Nelson to the western gold fields on the Grey and Buller. The only definite project which has yet been brought forward is that of Mr. Francis Stevens, who offers to go to London at his own expense, and raise a company with a capital of one million sterling, for the purpose of constructing the railway. The Examiner says that a commission appointed to inquire whether or not pleuropneurnonia has broken out in the province, are of opinion that although the existence of the terrible cattle disease is not proved beyond doubt, there are grave suspicions of the existence of some epidemic. The vexatious character of the regulations of the Scab Act in the province of Nelson has been a subject of much complaint. Sir David Monro has presented a petition to the Provincial Council on the subject, and Dr. Cusack has expressed his opinion that the repeated dippings and harassing treatment to which the sheep are subjected, causes a deterioration of the quality of the mutton ; and he attributes to this cause some cases of disease that have come under his notice in Nelson. Mr. Justice Richmond sat on the sth inst. for the first time in the capacity of Judge of the Supreme Court in Nelson. There are no fresh accounts from the Nelson gold fields except the usual ones of occasional new rushes, attended with the average amount of success. The Examiner has great hopes that the next summer will see another gold field opened.
