Hawke's Bay Herald. TUESDAY, JUNE 3, 1867.
The European news by way of Panama is important, as foreshadowing events of terrible significance. First, there is a prospect of war- between England and Spain — the latter power arrogantly refusing to release certain British seamen, taken as prisoners, and the former being firm iv demanding satisfaction. Latest |telegraphic messages tell us that British ships of war had beeu despatcl ed to Cadiz, to enforce reparation. Such a war would, however, be but " a, tempest in a tea pot" as compared with one to which events on the continent would seem to be tending. France
has beeu in treaty with the King of Holland for the purchase of the Duchy of Luxemburg, with its military works of stupendous strength, said to be second only to Gibraltar. Prussia, which would be menaced were this transaction completed, naturally resists, and a great amount of augry national feeling is the result. H6*w ifc will all end, who can tell $ but war between those two great uatious is an event of very probable occurrence.
His Honor the Superintendent returned to Napier on Saturday last, by the s.s. Wellington, he having accomplished the object he had in view iv visiting Auckland — that of procuring mometary assistance to meet present emergencies. In the passenger list of the Lord Ashley, which arrived the followiug day, we observe the names of Mr. Balfour and Mr. Sheath. The former gentleman visits this proviuce, we understand, with the view of reporting upon the harbour. His extended experience in such matters will be of the greatest advantage in indicating the best means of protecting property, not only from dangers arising from tidal influence, but also in case of floods, such as have been of late so serious iv their effects. Mr. Sbeath' has come, we learn, in connection with the business of his own department — that of telegraphic extension in this direction.
