WAIROA.
(from, our own correspondent.) Clyde, March 22, 1867. The excessively bad weather that we have had the last week in this place, has entirely put a stop to anything worth writing to you about. The election for a member to represent this district in the Provincial Council, took place on Wednesday last, the 20th inst. Lieut. Colonel Whitmore was proposed by Mr. Davies, and seconded by Mr. Todd, who came up from Napier specially for that purpose. There being no other candidate, Colonel Whitmore was declared to have | been duly elected. I bave just beard that the Taraipene was last seen anchored under Young Nicks Head (Poverty Bay.) She is supposed to have slipped her cable at the commencement of the late heavy gale and stood oufc to sea. Ifc is, possible, therefore, that she is in safety at Hicks' Bay ; I most sincerely trust it may be found to be the case. Mr, Campbell, the Mahia pilot, and his wife, were on board. The report of tbe wreck of the Henry on the Mahia beach is quite true ; all hands saved.
The Meanee Election. — Yesterday, at the nomination for Meanee district, Mr. H. S. Tiffen was proposed by Mr. Heslop, seconded by Mr. Hallet; Mr. McHardy was proposed by Mr. Hallet, but, soon after, said that he withdrew as a candidate. Mr. John Buchanan was proposed by Mr. Powdrell, and seconded by Mr. J. M. Stuart. Messrs. Tiffen and Buchanan both pledged themselves to oppose a toll gate on the White Road. In reply to Mr. Knox, Mr. Buchanan said that he did not go in for contention. Some other questions having been put and answered, Messrs. Tiffen and Buchanan were declared to be duly elected. Cox, the Auckland defaulter, has given himself up to the police authorities in Wellington.
