WAIROA.
(from our own correspondent) Clyde, Jan. 31, 1867. Everything here is extremely dull. No news of any importance. We are all waiting anxiously for the Superintendent's long promised visit. lam afraid, if protracted much longer, the Maoris will lose a large quantity of the food they have collected for the expected meeting, as the weather is very hot, and Maori food will not keep quite so well as Yorkshire hams. Mr. Getlrin has lately returned from a visit to Waikare Moana, the scene of the last fight in .this district. He reports having seen several fires burning on this side of the lake, and it was quite evident the Maories could not have left that place more than a day or so. He could see their Hau Hau flag quite plainly, flying on the other side of the lake. A native lad who went with him also told him that by lighting a signal fire on a certain hill on this side, it would bring them over at once to hear the news and have a chat. There is a rumour of Te Mokena (Tuparoa chief) having arrived at Turanga (Poverty Bay) with about 100 men on his way to this place. The natives Tiere have got hold of some story, which they say came through the interior, of an attack having taken place at Taranaki, in which unheard of numbers of pakehas were killed — loss on the native side, as usual, nil. It must be true, as native reports are always so much to be relied upon. We are sadly at a loss for a road along the bank of the river from the township to Turiroa, where the Military Settlers are now encamped. It is a pity to think that a small portion of the money so liberally voted by the Provincial Government for road-making in this district, is not put for that purpose, instead of making roads as they now are in places that will not for years to come be of any use. It would really be conferring a benefit to the whole of this community, even should it be only a bridle track.
