WAIROA.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT) January 10, 1867. It is with much regret I have to record a melancholy accident which took place on New Year's Day. . The victim, a very respectable man named Pain Blanc, a small sheep owner, who resided at Toha, the pilot's place, near the mouth of the river, under the following circumstances: — He
was in, "tW;ract?of-:ft^^^ to go to the traces, L'.^aej\'^U^tj^^^}f,f^ turned and kicked Ibiin-^6l^ii^!wo^|;^ stomach. The poor fe)iow ':^ :^op^o^ : S insensible, and medical. assistan^w|is|%S^ mediately procured. -¥qr-itl^^;ofji£^^ t^ days the unfortunate man ap^pj^ed|S^B^i doing well, so much so, ;thatl)r;SQpt^:l^|^; lieve, pronounced him "out of^aiageif^om^J .on the 6th, a sudden change for Hh^^l^f? took place, every means were trieol avail, and the poor fellow breathed ms^asjtfe? the same night about ten o'clock. Our ; Resident Magistrate went down to see. him ■', a few hours before he died : he appeared t0 ,4 be in great agony, but sensible to the last]| The poor fellow's melancholy end has [tyii&r a gloom over our little community; ODhougip a comparative stranger here, he was muchf 5 respected. / ; ;f The ketch Taraipene left this morning J for Napier, taking, as one of her passengers, Dr. Watson, who, I regret to say, was obliged to leave owing to ill health. He has, during his short stay among us, gained golden opinions from all hands, and I can safely say that no one could have left the place more regretted or more generally esteemed. The return cricket match between the military and the military settlers came off yesterday, the latter being again the victors, beating the military in one innings, with several runs to spare. It is but fair to state that, though the military settlers ; have had a little practice, the military have had none at all. There is some talk of another match between the civilians and military settlers, but I have not heard when it is to come off. The Hero has just arrived, and is now sailing up the river ; her skipper, Campbell, •certainly deserves some praise for his despatch on all occasions, and for his general 1 civility in executing any little commissionsentrusted to him. Major Fraser and Mr. Gascoigne havejust arrived overland from Napier,. having performed the journey in something less than a day and a half. Resident Magistrate's Court, Waiboa. (Before S.
