H.M.S. Salamander arrived on 30th ult. from ' Sydney, on a visit to ihe flag ship Challenger. ; The Coloninl Government gunboat Sturt, . Captain Fairchild, arrived on Saturday morn- : ing, 29th inst., from Tauranga, with the Hon. , the Defenoe Minister. Since loaving Auck- : land the Sturt has visited tho districts of • Ohiwa, Opotiki, Whakatane, and other places < on the coast with the Defence Minister, who had been engaged in the seleotion of military settlors' land. White Island was likewise ' visited.— Southern Cross, December 31. [A . private letter received in Napier says that the Sturfc has been condemned as wholly unscaworthy.] The cutter Betsey, with sawn timber for Napier, was to sail from Auokland on the Ist or 2nd inst. The schooner Success, Oapt. Frost, arrived ; on the 28tli with a cargo of guano from Maiden Island. H.M.S. Brisk arrived from Sydney on tbe 28th inst.
