»» I L — _____ ii i il Postal Irregularities. — Some time last month the new table of postage rates was sent up to the Postmaster here with directions to bring it into force at once. The Postmaster obeyed, issued his notice, and every newspaper which left this place by the last Panama mail on the 4th had a threepenny stamp on ifc, and every paper sent to Australia or England on the Bth a penny stamp. Protestations were in vain. If you put on the stamp your paper would go ; if not, ib would lie in the Post Office, silently but ineffectually protesting. After the two mails were gone, that is on the 1 Ith, notice was received at the Post Office that tho new rates were not to be levied till the Ist of January — that is to say not till the next English mail is about to leave. As the increased rates were levied in defiance of the law, we shall be glad to see what reparation the Government proposes for those whom its servants have defrauded by obtaining money under false pretences should not be allowed even in a Government. If, as we suspect, the whole thing was concocted by Mr. Eliott, we trust, at least for the future, the Postmaster-Gene-ral will see that his exuberant ingenuity is kept withiu moderate bounds. — Taranaki Herald.
