The Hawke's Bay Hearld SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1865. GOVERNMENT RIFLE PRIZES.

Regulations for the approaching shooting for the Government rifle prizes have just been issued by Colonel Haultain, the Defence Minister. We subjoin a precis of the terms of the firing, which seem to have been framed in a very liberal spirit : — COLONIAL PRIZES. The Champion Prize of New Zealand, the winner also to keep and wear the Champion Pouch and Belt until the next Government Colonial Prizes shot for, £100. 2nd Prize, the winner also to receive the Medal presented by the Council of the National Rifle Association, £75. 3rd, 4th, and sth Prizes, £50 ; £30 and £20 respectively. Ranges, 400, 500 and 600 yards, 5 shots at each range ; size of target, 6 ft. x 6 ft. ; centre, 4 ft. x 4 ft. ; bull's eye, 2 ft. x 2 ft. Nature of points — Bull's eye 3, centre 2, outer l', with 1 point added for each hit. Competitors for Colonial Prizes will be chosen as follows : — The 20 best shots for each District Prize will fire 3 shots at each range of 400, 500 and 600 yards. The highest scorer will be the representative of the district to compete for the Colonial Prizes ; but no district will be allowed to send a representative who does not score at least 30 points. Only 23 competitors can be permitted— Town and Suburbs of Napier, one; the Napier Military Settlers (including the forces on the East Coast), one. Firing to take place at Wellington. Passages of competitors will be paid by Government, and 10s. per diem allowed to nonresidents. DISTRICT PRIZES. Napier Town & Suburbs (Militia & Volunteers.
