When there the vessel had a narrow esoape. Owing to the hawse pipe giving way, bo muoh time was lost in getting under weigh that the vessel, as she wore round, just cleared the reef. The Lord Ashley left Auckland on the 4th inst,, at 4.16 p.m., having been detained 4$ hours for the English mail, whioh was brought from Nelson to Auckland by the Airedale. On the night of the 4th, wbb enveloped in a dense fog, rendering it prudent that the vessel should go at half speed only, whioh considerably lengthened the passage. Bounded East Cape on the sth, at 4.30 p.m. ; passed Portland Island on the 6th at 6 a.m. with strong breezes ; and brought up in the roadstead at 11 a.m. S The s.s. St. Kilda was launohed from the N.Z.S.N. Company's Slip, Evans' Bay, on Saturday last, and was brought round into the harbor on Saturday afternoon. The repairs required by the St. Kilda have been executed in the most creditable manner by Mr. Charles Seagar, whose engineering skill it has so frequently been our duty to commend to the notice o£ our readers. We believe that it has not been yet finally settled who is to have command of the St. Kilda. In the meantime, however, Capt. Kennedy, Master Warden of the Marine Board, holds honorary command. — JV.
