NON-ARRIVAL OF THE EGMONT.

THE non-arrival of the Egmont, due on the 21st inst., has given rise to some speculation. It will be remembered that she left this port under engagement to convey a large number of military settlers from Tauranga to Auckland. The object of this movement is supposed to have been the massing of the colonial forces with the view of taking theJWereroa pah, and it is quite possible that the Egmont, instead of landing the men at Auckland (to be marched overland to Manukau harbour, which was probably closed to shipping by south-westerly gales) might be placed under orders to take them to the west Coast by rounding the North Cape. However thia is mere hypothesis.
