MARITIME INTELLIGENCE.
ARRIVAL OF THB S. S. QUEEN. The s, s. Queen arrived yesterday morning at 2 o'olock. She left Auckland on Tuesday, the 23rd instant, at 3 p.m., arrived at Tauranga next morning, and remained about an hour. The same day the steamer lay to off White Island, and afforded the passengers an opportunity of going ashore and inspecting this natural curiosity. Several of them did so, returning with numerous specimens of sulphur. Next morning (Thursday tbe 25th) at 1 o'clock, in steaming between ' East /.ape and East Cape Island, the steamer grazed upon a sunken rock. It is situated about three quarters of a cable length west of the middle of the Island, and a few cables length to the southward and eastward of the rock upon which the Beautiful Star struck a few weeks ago. Captain Cellem was astonished at the. accident, as be has taken his vessel again and again over the identical spot. It is not supposed that the Queen has sustained any injury. ARRIVAL OF THE PRINCE ALFRED. The P.,N.Z. k A.R.M. Co's s. s. Prince Alfred, Captain Thomas Randall, arrived yesterday at 3 p.m. • She left Port Chalmers at half-past 3 p.m. on the 20th, passed the Heads at 4 p.m., experienced thence toßanks Peninsula strong S.W. gales with frequent squalls of rain and occasional flashes of lightning ; arrived at Port Lyttelton at 8.35 a.m. on the 21st,. thus making the passage in 16 hours 40 minutes. The English Mail was not telegraphed at the Bluff when the Prince Alfred left Port Chalmers. Captain Randall reports that during his stay at Port Chalmers, tbe barometer was at times unusually low,, being on the 17th 28.55, wind ranging from N. to N.E. with heavy squalls. On the 18th the wind veered to S.W. with frequent heavy squalls of wind and rain and occasional hail storms, such weather continuing until the departure of the Prince Alfred. . Left Lyttelton at 4.30 p.m, on the 22nd, arrived in Wellington at 8.15 a.m, on the 23th making the passage in 18| hours ; left Wellington on the 25th and arrived here on the 26th.
