The sum collected towards obtaining from Otago the services of an experienced miner for the purpose of prospecting the district, having proved insufficient for this purpose, we learn that arrangements have been made with Mr. Sturm, of Nuhaka, to undertake the duty. He does not anticipate thafrgold will be found anywhere on the coast range, there being no indications there of primary formation ; but thinks the country between Ngaruroro and the Eastern slopes of the Ruahine to Patea, the most promisiug locality. He purposes starting on Monday next, accompanied by two others, and will follow up the Ngaruroro to a point about eight miles above Mr. Tuke's out- station ; whence he will turn to the north for the exploration of the Patea district — intending to recross the Ngaruroro about the gorge on the Ruahine, and exploring the range as he proceeds.

This exploration, it is thought, will occupy about two months, and the expense will be about £10 per week — exclusive of tents and tools, — which, for eight weeks, will amount as nearly as possible to the sum subscribed.

This little party, although starting in an unpretentious way, may possibly be the means of great good to the province. At all events what is worth having is worth trying for, and the best wishes of the community will follow the small band of prospectors upon their journey.
