Open Column.

To the Editor oftlie Hawke's Bay Herald. Sib— lt would appear to be a task of some difficulty, that of inducing the inhabitants of Hawke's Bay to part with their mites, even on occasions when the sufferings of their fellow-creatures are both palpable and intense. Of the extreme destitution of thousands of English operatives, and of the remarkable patience and resignation exhibited by them, all in this Province must have been aware for some months past, and yet the cry for timely assistance which crossed the water from a country we call " Home" has found little or no echo in a land where poverty 18 unknown, and in which the poorest can thank his Maker for food and raiment in abundance. It is humiliating to think that an increase of goods and riches has rendered those, (who in their day, perhaps, may have experienced both want and hardship,) deaf to the urgent appeals of their countrymen, who, though unoffending, have suddenly been obliged to pass from a state of comparative affluence to one of heart- . rending and utter penury and wretchedness. : We cannot too speedily make . reparation for our shameful indifference, and .sad want of genorosity. Let those who, from their position in the Province ought to take the initiative in matters of this nature, throw themselves into the work without delay, and not leave it to others, whose efforts though strenuous and praiseworthy may not be so good in the advocated cause. I sincerely trust that the Province of Hawke's Bay, without further loss of time, may, by its judicious liberality, succeed in retrieving its character, and. in rendering effectual aid to the pitiable victims of the American Disunion. I am, &c, Napier, Nov. 24, 1862.
