HAWKE'S BAY HERALD TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1862.
Our space this morning is chiefly taken, up with extracts of so interesting a character that we would not willingly displace them. One is an account of His Excellency's visit to Otaki ; from a perusal of which one can scarcely rise without feeling that Sir George's mission has hitherto been wholly unproductive, and that the king movement is gaining rather than diminishing in strength. Whether the new Native Lands Bill will work any change we cannot say, but we greatly fear that the time is very far distant indeed when New Zealand shall be able to claim the title that has been so sanguinely bestowed upon it — that of Britain of the South. The other extract to which we refer is an account of certain extraordinary proceedings in the Province of Marlborough. A new Council is convened ; but it is no sooner assembled than the Superintendent, as holding office till the election of his successor, summarily prorogues it, and, with 6 other members, leaves the Council Chamber. Nothing daunted, those who remain go on with the public busiuess, elect a Speaker and Superintendent, and adjourn till the following day. On re-as-sembling, they find themselves locked out, and forthwith repair to a hotel, where business is proceeded with, and a resolution carried to the effect that the seat of the local government shall be Blenheim instead of Picton ! Quite apart from the merits of this most unseemly dispute, into which we do not now enter, all who are interested in the prosperity of the new provinces must greatly deplore the existence of such a state of things.
