THE OTAGO GOLD FIELDS.
By last Overland Mail from Wellington several .letters have come to hand from persons who left Napier for Otago, upon learning the news of the gold discoveries, and who, after early difficulties and discouragements, have began to taste the sweets of success. One case, in particular, is worthy of reference — that of one who has been so far successful as to be able to send his wife £100. We have, b^een favored with the perusal of a letter from Tuapeka, written by a well known Napier tradesman, from which we take the following extracts ;—
In Gabriel's gully stores have sprang up like mushrooms. There are also baking establishments by the dozen, and numerous hotels, restaurants, grog shops, &c. No want of luxuries here ; the epicurean may indulge himself with the dainties of every clime... ...Mr. &eed has returned to town, but has failed to find another Gabriel's. Gully. He got gold almost every place he tried, but not in paying quantities. Many will be taken aback at this intelligence, because not a few were dodging about on the strength of his finding a rich field. Bat I hope they won't have much cause to be disappointed, as gold has been found in the spurs and ridges of the Tuapeka. Thousands are now employed at these deep .sinkings, and are doing first rate. We have tried it ourselves and are doing well. We have cleared all our expenses (including wages) from the day we left, and have something over to boot You will be thinking I should advise you to come now as we are doing so well, but keep in mind how long we were at work before we did anything. It is a great expense to come, and it is but a lottery^ after all.
The following are the particulars of the gold
