Appointments. — Amongst the multitude of appointments contained in Gazettes recently to hand, we observe that of C. W. La Serre, Chief Officer of police in the Province of Hawke's Bay, as one of the persons appointed to institute proceedings for certain offences against the " Arms Act, 1860." Also, that of Lieut. Bates, of the 65th regt., late of the detachment stationed at Napier, as Native interpreter to the forces at Otahuhu camp.
Meanee Bridge. — We learn that in course of the week the pile engine was taken up to the site of the future bridge over the Meanee river, and that men are now employed at the work. The timber has liow all arrived — the last having come to hand per * Esther.' We trust that no further delay, from whatever cause, will take place in the erection of this essentially necessary public structure. The Census. — By proclamation in the New Zealand Gazette of Sept. 30, made under the provisions of the " Census Act Amendment Act, 1860," it is declared that the forms of Census returns shall be delivered throughout the Colony between the 25th. Nov. and 14th Dec. this year, and that the said forms shall be demanded, and received on the 16th Dec, or as^oon thereafter as practicable. In a more recent Gazette, Capt. Curling has been appointed Census enumerator for this Province. We believe that most of the papers have already been delivered.
The Elections. — It will tie seen from the notice of the Returning Officers that the nomination of a member for "Waipuku-
rau hi lieu of Mr. Ormond, will take ps%ce on Friday the 6th prox. The nomination for Porangahau, consequent on the issue of the new writ, is fixed for Tuesday the , 3rd prox. Mr. Gollan has resigned for Waimarama, and a new writ has been issued for this district. Bush Licenses. — It will be seen from notification in another column that the fee for these licenses has been considerably increased, viz., to £30 for townships, and £20 for rural districts. The alteration, we find, took place some time ago, but the fact is not generally known. Bathing. — Some time since a meeting was held at the Royal Hotel for the purpose of taking measures for the enclosure of a public bathing place, than which we know of no institution more wanted — bathing being at once an essential to health and a most delightful recreation. The attendance .was scanty, but certain resolutions, itiJj^ears, were passed. These are now beingf acted upon — a subscription list having been taken round .within the past few days, and a good many signatures obtained. It is to be regretted that this step had not been taken earlier in the season, but better late than never. Mb. W. Bookman. — We learn that the Superintendent of police started for Waipuna on Thursday morning, in order to make further inquiry as to the fate of Mr. Boorman, and more diligent search, if this •be possible. Should no additional information be obtained, Mr. La Serre will probably return this day.
