The Spit is now a busier scene, consequent on the late arrivals — three from Auckland and one from Wellington. Most of the merchandise and timber on board is, however, on private account ; and the Sea Serpent is now off Clive, engaged in discharging timber for a settler in the neighborhood. Theiirewooa to hand has been quitted at an average of 30s. per ton, and some sugars are being offered at a high figure. Maize and oats still maintain former quotations. An item in the cargo of the Sear Serpent is worthy of special notice-^-that of a press and printing materials for the establishment of another newspaper in Napier. The fine weather of the past week — cold, yet healthful and bracing— has served partially to dry up the roads inland, and to open communication with the interior — much to the improvement of trade. • ..
