To the Editor of the 3awke*s Bay, Her aid. Sib,— Just, a word or two (with your permission) in reply to your correspondent F.CL in your last : I have not room for more. This letter of his has fully confirmed my suspicion with regard to the dtitonws which incites Mm. Proved, by his unfair and garbled quotations from my letter, and by his building on , such, false premises ; an excellent illustration of swppressio aero. and mggestio falsi. F.C. says, — (as from me !) " The ture zohawhai was dated January 25th, and issued at Taranaki Feb. 22nd; the " Government account" of the matter was published July 31st, or more than 6 months after -the proclamation of the war! Is not the charge of neglect on the part of the Government fully proved by Mr, Coleuso's own showing?" To which ;I answer, NO. For, Ist, I, had stated, that, ? ( 3n. the Karere Maori of July 31st MrMcLean had himself AGAIN" given a clear and distinct account of the whole affair ; even to the occupying of 11 closely printed pages" : — And, 2nd, F.O. ought to have known, that the Governor had given from the very outset of 'the Taranaki struggle a clear account of the whole sad affair ; every Kwrere Maori', from the beginning of tbe outbreak downwards, being occupied with a perspicuous statement of the same. In the February number of that serial is given not only an account of the Governor's visit to Taranaki, &c., but also, that very valuable paper of His Excellency which contains such .an able and lucid statement of his Native policy, and which I had my3elf the honor to bring; before the notice of our Provincial Council in March last. ' As I view it, any further words are but wasted on such a dishonest writer as your correspondent F.C. Therefore, in taking a final leave, I would direct him to a sentence in my former reply to his Ist letter — "That a man is in common justice fcouud to ascertain the truth of a charge before he makes it." • - Yours &c, WILLIAM COIEXSO. Nov. 9, 1860. To the Editor ef the Haw&e's Bay Herald: Sib, — In your last paper 2rd November, I read a letter signed "Observer" alluding to Mr. G. S. Cooper's absence from the Province for 4 months. I would ask you what Mr. M.Fitzgerald, Surveyor to the Native Department, has been doing. , No one has any reason to complain of his absence, but his presence for the last six or eight months in Napier, with a slight recreation in Auckland, has induced many to sympathise with him thinking that he was out of employment, but to the astonishment of many it is now stated that he is drawing from \\xe General Government chest nearly £400 a year, and which will eventually have to be paid by this Province. I only make these enquiries to relieve the anxioua mxnd of our new Provincial Treasurer^ Yours &c, A Coijonist.
