i- Napier School-house. — A meeting of 'subscribers was held in the school-house 'on Monday evening, at which, with a view of complying with the terms of the "Hawke's Bay Education Act," so as to obtain pecuniary assistance towards the much needed repair of the building, eight trustees were elected from the body of the subscribers, in addition to those originally appointed. We are sorry to learn that difficulties yet present themselves in the way of the money being handed over. A title to the land is an indispensable preliminary, and it is by no means clear that the deed of grant can legally be drawn in favor of the present trustees. The doubt thus raised will, we:- -regret to learn, necessitate a reference to the Attorney-General. Hawke's Bay Militia. — We learn that the Provincial Government has requested his Excellency the Governor to appoint for the Hawke's Bay Province an Adjutant of Militia, under whom the volunteer rifle corps of the different districts will be organised and trained. It is not improbable that the rifles, for the purchase of which a resolution was passed by the Provincial Council, last session, will now be on their way to the colony. Postal Communication with Poverty Bay. — As intimated in our last, and as will be seen from our advertising columns, this "morning, the Wairoa post is about to be extended to Poverty Bay. This is a spirited act on the part of the local government, and we feel sure that the expense incurred will be re.-paid a hundred r fpld in the commercial advantages which will flow from the two districts being brought into intimate connexion. Waipureku Ferry. — We mentioned in our last that this ferry had been taken over by the Provincial Government, and that the lease of it would be put up to auction. The charges, which have hitherto been heavy, are to be thus reduced : — Foot passengers and persons on horseback, 6d. ; horse carts, Is. ; bullock drays, 2s. — to include going and returning the same day. Inland Postal Communication. — It will be seen from a government notice calling for tenders, that the benefits of mail communication are forthwith to be extended to Puketapu and Maraekakaho. On every hand we see signs of progress. What a change between Hawke's Bay; under Wellington, government, and Hawke's Bay governed by itself ! . w Harbour Regulations have long been a great want in Napier — one, however, not likely to be of long continuance ; for we learn that, regulations suited to the requirements of the port having been drawn up, they have been forwarded by the Superintendent to his Excellency the Governor, with a view to their being du|y proclaimed. . A Thunder Storm passed over Napier on the- afternoon of Thursday last, cooling and purifying the atmosphere, and, during jthe .brief -period of its continuance, deluging i the parched earth with rain. The day had ibeeii extremely sultry, and the change was, ;in"all respects, a most salutary one. : Labour is encouraged by the Provincial Government by a bonus of 365., or one week's wages, payable to every able-bodied man joining the road parties. It is also intended to erect an Immigration Barracks for the accommodation of working men and their families, upon their first arrival. Branch Post Office, Napier.- — We ! learn that a branch post officers now open- ' ed, or will be immediately, on the premi- : ses of Mr. Sutton, Shakes-peare^road. A • desideratum long fell*- wilt thus be satisfactorily supplied. I Registration' of Deeds i I—An1 — An office for i this-purpose is -to be established in Napier without. delays Mr-Scaly is, we- believe, to.be Registrar.' ' ' ; -— % ; " . FkoTOGRAPiHY.-^-It will be "perceived fyoriLduf advertising, columns that' an opportunity now presents itself of obtaining portraits on the photographic-principle.
