THE HAWKE'S BAY HERALD. Napier, August 13, 1859.
NEWS FROM NORTH AND SOUTH. By the "Wonga Wonga" and "Eliezer" we have our usual southern files, and Auckland papers to the 30th ult. A General Government Gazette, published on the 27th ult., contains an important despatch (which we re-publish) on the subject of native bills passed last session. The same Gazette contains the official notification of Mr. Hart's appointment as judge of the District Court for Wellington and Hawke's Bay. The Auckland papers chronicle the sudden death, on the 20th ult., of Alexander Shepherd Esq., formerly Colonial Treasurer of New Zealand. Disease of the heart is supposed to have been the cause. A testimonial had been publicly presented to Dr. Hochstetter, of the Novara Scientific Expedition, with a suitable address, in recognition of his services to the Province of Auckland by his geographical and topographical exploration. The meeting was presided over by the Superintendent. The testimonial consisted of the sum of £150, contained in a purse of velvet elegantly embroidered with gold. In Wellington we note the usual "war of words" between the editors of the two principal journals — the appointment of Mr. Fitzherbert to the Land Commissionership forming the subject. — A valuable report of that efficient body, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, appears in the journals.- — Rumours which had prevailed for some days, and which had caused considerable uneasiness, to the effect that the Wairarapa natives had committed aggressions on the European settlers, had proved unfounded — Mr. Buller, the Native Interpreter, having "been specially despatched to ascertain the facts.
