'We might have been'-bnt why recal the'past? Why bid us gaze upon the wreck of years ? The wreck of th' once beautiful —and whose Bhrine Though long deserted —Manhood still reveres! 'We might have been'-but what avails the thought, When care has-cast her shadows o'er Youth's brow? When those bright dreams which Hope and Fancy wrought Like summer's roses —are all withered now ? 'We might have been' —is but a common cry Of many hearts still ling'ring on life's scene, Yet few can tell what depths of meaning lie, . In those few sad'ning word 9 'We might have been.' B.H.
