Peisok Breach. — A most daring and we regret to say for the time successful attempt at. escape was yesterday made by a pprtion of the prisoners . in Wellington G-aol. It. seems that these convicts who for previous attempts of this nature have been confined in Irons, and known by the name of the Chain Gang, on their -return home at dinner time suddenly threw themselves upon the Turnkeys and after a desperate resistance succeeded in overpowering them, severaTof the prisoners and two of the gaolers (Chitty and Slight) were slightly wounded, but not dangerously so. After locking the Gaolers in the ceils, the prisoners knocked off their irons and possessed themselves of such fire arms as they could lay hands on, together with some clothes and money, and de- . camped over the hills in the rear of the Gaol. The alarm having been given, the Military were turned ' out with the utmost promptitude, and were on the spot within naif an hour of the outbreak and gave chase. One of the prisoners named Cullen was taken; but the remainder could not be discovered. The' police were sent in pursuit and., from five : of the, prisoners haying called, at: the house of a Mrs.' Harris, Karori,,late last night,; it' is to be hoped'now that their track is known., it wifl\' be vigorously followed up. .. The. . names of. the., prisoners who escaped are Kelly, Woods, . Cullen, Darley, Stringer,.. Shields, D)Arcy,. and Gafneyi all of them 'under sentence of penal servitude and the majority of them soldiers. It is supposed that they will attempfrto. make for Porirau,;in the; hope of escaping ■ from thence by boat or yessel to. the other islaiid.-r-Independent, April 5.
