THE HAWKE'S BAY HERALD. Napier, Saturday, April 16, 1859.
The event of the week has been the arrival' of the king party from Waikato, and the consequent feasting and speechifying at the pa Whaikaro. The Waikatos and other strangers were formally welcomed on Thursday, with the usual ceremonies — a good many Europeans being present as spectators. After a substantial repast provided both for native and European — the latter being regaled with roast pork, potatoes, tea, fresh butter, &c, — the speaking commenced, but it consisted nearly altogether of speeches of welcome. Yesterday, the proceedings were more of a business character, but we are not yet in possession of full particulars of what transpired. The feeling of the chiefs here and of Maniwhera, the Wairarapa chief, is, however, we believe, in favor of continued loyalty to Queen Victoria. The crowded state of our columns, as well as the want of time, prevents us from doing more in this number than giving this interesting subject a passing notice. In our next, however, we hope, through the kindness of friends, to furnish our readers with a full report of what has taken place.
