THE DISTRICT OF HAWKE'S BAY,

Under the "New Provinces Act 1858" of the General Assembly, was, by proclamation of His Excellency the Governor, dated the Ist November, 1858, declared to by a separate.,province — the seventh o&J^ew^BZeaJand. It comprises all that district, being heretofl|re-parcet of the Province of Wellington which lies or is withiif the limits following, that is to say, — -a line commencing at a stream called Waimata, near Cape Turnagain, running along the Northern boundary of Puke-toi to Puke-toi range, thence in a straight line to where Te-rau-mea falls into Manawatu River, near Awa Purua, thence along the Manawatu River, to the gorge in the Ruahine Mountains, thence along the summit of the said Mountains to latitude 39 ° 30' South, thence in a right line to a point in latitude 39° South, longitude 176° 30' East, thence in an Easterly direction along the 39th parallel of South latitude to the sea coast and thence Southwards along the coast line including the islands adjacent thereto, to the Waimata Stream. — In the same proclamation, Napier was declared to be the capital of the Province. On the Ist of December 1858, it was declared by proclamation that the Provincial Council of the said Province should consist of ten members ; that the Province, for the election of the same, should be divided into six electoral districts, viz. : — Napier (to return three members),; Napier Country (two) ; Clive (one); Mphaka (one) ; Te Ante (one).; and Waipukurau (two.) The issue of writs for such election was deferred till after the Ist January 1859, that being the day upon which the "Regulation of Elections Act, 1858" was to come into force. They may, however, be now daily expected ; so that, in all probability, next "Quarterly Almanac" will contain the names of our new Superintendent and members of Council.
