THE HAWKE'S BAY HERALD.

h Napieb., Saturday, Dec. 11, 1858.

; ; THE OS THE WEEK, • Notwithstanding the number of arrivals, from the 'WongaWonga' on Sunday last,

to the overland mail, last evening, is meagre in the extreme. Two mails from Auckland — one per 'Emily Allison/ and the other per land route, yet, so far as we are aware, no despatches from head quarters upon the subject of our electoral arrangements. The ordinary topics of the week'ftre absorbed in the vortex of politics-, ' as our overcrowded open column will amply testify. While we, with many others, regret the personal hue with which some of our correspondence is imbued, we believe that, in times of political excitement, our usual rule must be somewhat relaxed in its stringency ; indeed, interference under such circumstances is, to. say the least, a matter of considerable delicacy.

Our local intelligence comprises twoim-. portant cases in the Resident Magistrate's' Court — 'Karaitiana v. D. Munn,' for alleged trespass on native land. Their importance, however, deserves more space than we can allot them in this issue. — A man named Bradshaw, from Wairoa, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labour, for attempting to steal from the till of Mr. Marshall, of the "Settler's hotel. — By the 'W.op^^^e two soldiers committed here forj^^^^Sturned as passengers. They w|r^^rought up at the late sessions, and, no wijrfesses being;: present, were discharged by the^judge, who, at the same time, it is said, administered a 'wigging' to our local Resident. Magistrate. The men, it appears, were forwarded for trial at the March sessions, but arrived before those of December hud quite closed.

Our arrangements for mail communication with the interior continue to eive much,

dissatisfaction. We think, how premature soever such an idea may seem,, that the establishment of a Chamber of Commerce, or the organization of a body with similar functions, would be the best means of re-vivi-fying our postal system ; ; for the yecommendations of such a body would unquestionably receive prompt attention at the hands of the new postmaster-general. — On the morning of Sunday last, the mails per 'Wonga' and 'Queen' were opened'" and delivered upon arrival by the postiißaster,.
