WELLINGTON.
By the "Lucy James" and "Sea Serpent," we have Wellington papers of the Ist and 4th inst. The elections for the City, Wairarapa, and Country Districts were close at hand. Messrs. Hunter and Wakefield would probably be unopposed for the first, it having been publicly announced that the Superintendent had applied for a dissolution. The Council was prorogued by proclamation on the 4th iust. The .actions brought respectively by Messrs. King and Allen against Dr. Featherston and the proprietors of the "Independent," came on for hearing on Tuesday, the 31st ult. Mr. King and Mr. Bunne/ appeared for the plaintiffs, Mr. Brandon and Mr. Fox for the defendants. After hearing the arguments on both sides, the Court decided that the pleas were bad, and must be struck out. Time was given the defendants to amend their plea, on payment of the costs occasioned by the demurer. At the criminal sittings, John Wood was found guilty of two distinct acts of Burglary at the Hutt, and sentenced to four years' imprisonment with hard labour, for each offence. A very "stiff" correspondence had taken place between Mr. Wakefield and Mr. Holdsworth, on the subject of influence exerted by the latter upon voters, directly or indirectly, in his capacity of paymaster.
