HAWKE'S BAY HERALD "EXTRA." Tuesday, 22nd June, 1858.
The fears which, for some days, have been entertained for the safety of the favorite Ahuriri schooner, the "Sea Serpent," was dispelled this morning by her appearance in the roadstead — although unfortunately, in a disabled state. The " Sea Serpent" left Wellington on Thursday tne 10th inst., very deeply laden. On the Saturday, when off Cape Palliser, the wind being nor-
east, with a tremendous sea running, and the vessel rolling heavily, the fore-mast went by the board. In five hours afterwards a jury mast was rigged and the schooner under sail. On the night of Monday the 14th — the day of the steamer's arrival — the " Sea Serpent " entered the Bay, and fetched, it is supposed, as far westward as the Bluff, but, from the extreme darkness of the night, was obliged to heave to.
The same night, it will be remembered, a heavy soutuer came on, which drove the ill-fated vessel to the northward of Portland Island, betwixt which and Cape Kidnappers she has been baffled till this morning.
