THE APPROACHING ELECTION
The "Henry," with the new superintendency writ, was known to be on her passage from Nelson to Wellington, when the steamer sailed. Ere now, in all probability, she has arrived, and those parts of the Province in the immediate neighbourhood of the capital already in the throes of another political struggle.
Should we, residing in a distant part of the province, and hoping for a separate political existence, take part in such struggle, is a question now agitating men's minds.
We incline to the opinion that we should. Ahuriri has early taken the field against ultra-provinci:ilism. It has exclaimed against it upon every opportunity ; and, in petitioning for separation, has indicated its desire that the boon should be granted in the simplest form. Now, Dr. Featherston is well known as the great and consistent champion of ultra- provincialism ; while the p:irty represented by Mr. St. Hill are apparently sincere in their desire to see the powers of the provinces lessened, and the blessings of local self government diffused throughout the length and breadth of the land.
Apart from personal, or even Provincial considerations, we put it to our readers whether, were they to vote for Dr. Feathorston, or were his election to be secured through their neutrality, they would act a consistent part in the eyes of the colony — whether, indeed, they would not thereby supply reason to doubt the sincerity of their pi-otestations, and thus retard that great consummation to which they so anxiously and hopefully look forward.
