AUCKLAND.

Our dates by the Emily Allison are to the 3rd inst. From a private source we learn that the Admiralty were about to take up tonnage for conveyance of 800 men and 32 officers for Auckland, and 800 men and 32 officers for Wellington. The 74th is one of the regiments spoken of. And the date of their departure from England would, it was supposed, be some time in March. — New : Zealander, March 31. Melancholy Death. — A distressing instance of the uncertainty of human life occurred during the parade ofthe 58th regiment, in the Albert Barrack Sqnare, on Saturday last. In the course of the afternoon's drill, Pay Sergeant Connor of the Grenadier Company, fell down in the ranks and shortly afterwards expired. Every attention, we need not say, was immediatelyrendered, but all in vain ; the vital spark had fled. An inquest was held on Monday and, according to the post mortem examination, death had resulted from coup de soleil, attended with disease of the heart. We know not if the former cause was aggravated by the present hideous shako which disfigures our soldiery, and which is utterly unprotective ; but we do think that, in sunny climes, the sooner such head gear is abolished the better will it be both for the health and the appearance of the troops. Poor Connor was interred with every possible honour, civil and military, on Monday afternoon ; his remains being followed to the grave by upwards of a hundred of our fellow citizens, and by a very large concourse of his comrades ofthe 58th and 65th regiments, Colonel Wynyard and many of his officers being of the number : the full regimental band giving an expressive solemnity to the said occasion —Ibid. Promotions.-— The following promotions we learn, have occurred in the 58th Regiment :— 'Major Nugent to be Lieut. Colonel by Brevet, Lieut. Gladwyn Wynyard. to be Captain — Ensign Hill to be Lieutenant.— Ibid. The 77th Regiment, recently stationed in Sydney, is reported, says the New Zealander, to, have got the route for HongKong..
