WELLINGTON

By the steamer we have our usual files to the 13th inst., (Saturday). On that evening the English mail arrived. The "Southern Cross" reached Wellington on the Ist inst. Capt. Mourilyan reported the anchorage at Hawke's Bay to be perfectly secure for the largest ships — the "Southern Cross" having rode through the strongest gales. The Wellington Reform party had suffered a defeat in the election for the Wellington Country Districts—Mr. Schultze (the Government candidate) having—exclusive of Maaatwatu— polled 148 yofcs to Mr. Bow-

ler's 112. The •'Spectator" ascribes the result to a want of due effort on the part of the Reformers.

A public meeting had taken place with reference to the tariff recommendations of the Chamber of Commerce, at which a memorial was adopted, in opposition to that forwarded by the members of the Chamber. The proposed alterations would, it was alleged, fall heavily on the poor and lightly on the rich. We may find room for the memorial in our next.

The Council met on the afternoon of Monday. It was opened hy the Superintendent in an address which lasted in delivery about an hour. Of the proceedings we have no definite intelligence, the steamer having left early on Tuesday morning. Mr. Ludlam was appointed speaker, Dr. Welch, clerk (!), and the office of sergeant-at-arms very properly abolished.

Messrs. Gollan & FitzGerald had not reached Wellington. In connection with the events of the day, we have received a number of political placards — as destitute of wit as they are of good taste.
