EUROPEAN NEWS TO 15th OCTOBER.
The Blackwall liner, "Swiftsure," arrived at Melbourne,, from London, on 21st ultimo, with news from Plymouth to 15th
October. She lias thus made the passage in 67 days. The E. and A.R.M. steamer left Southampton, with the mails, on 12th October. The Queen was to be proclaimed Empress of Hindostan. The commercial affairs of Hungary are exciting some attention in Vienna, for the failures in some of the leading cities have been numerous and serious. The standard for recruits for regiments of the line was reduced to the lowest limit reached during the Russian war. 5000 men were in readiness to embark for India. 10,000 more militia men were to be embodied in addition to 14,000 for garrison duties. Several frightful murders had been perpetrated in Great Britain ; and an extensive Customs' fraud had been discovered at Belfast. A Russian man-of-war was lost between Revel and Cronstadt, with three Admirals and 1400 souls on board. The Bth October was observed throughout Great Britain as a day of fast and humiliation. The Rev. Mr. Spurgeon preached in the Crystal Palace to nearly 24,000 persons. £676 was the amount collected. The total amount subscribed at home for the India Relief Fund is nearly £100, 000. The feeling against the East India Company was running high. The GovernorGeneral Lord Canning, was to be replaced by Lord Elgin. The cholera extends over nearly the whole of the northern continent of Europe. At Gluckstadt 40 per cent of the population had died. The harvest was the earliest and most fruitful of many years. Wheat averaged nearly 70 lbs. per bushel.
