THE HAWKE'S BAY HEEALD EXTRA. Napier, Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1857. FROM WELLINGTON
We have, by the Wonga Wonga, the final result of the elections. They show a majority against the Government of 14 — the relative numbers being — adherents of the Reform Association, 21 ; supporters of the Government 7. This does not include the two members for this District, who do not ally themselves with either one party or the other. The* election for the Wairarapa District took place on the 10th ult., at Greytown. The candidates were Messrs Carter, Borlase, Revans, Jackson, and Hughes, who polled respectively 62, 41, 41, 18, 0. Messrs. Revans and Borlase being thus equal, Mr. St. Hill, the Returning Officer, gave his casting vote in favour of the latter, and declared Messrs Carter and Borlase to be duly elected. The Wanganui election resulted as a matter of course, in the return of four Government supporters, including Mr. Fox., who and Mr. Brandon, are the only two members of the late executive who have obtained a seat in the Council. The returns for Wanganui and Rangitikei District were as follows :— Watt, 196 ; Fox, 193 ;
Campbell, 150 ; Handley ; 139 ; Kells, 99, On the 19th ult., the "Radical Reform" party held a banquet at the Lyceum Theatre to celebrate their success at the recent Provincial Elections. About .200 persons sat down to dinner at 7 o'clock. Mr. George Moore was in ; the Chair, having Mr. G. Hunter, m.p.c., on his right, and Mr. Ludlam, m.p.c, on his left. In prominent positions near the Chair were Messrs. Wakefield, Toomath, Allen, Bowler, Stokes, James Wallace, Varnham, Ashton St. Hill, Barry, Corbett, M'Manaway, W. Phillips, M'Laggan, King, Carpenter, and Warburton, Members of the Provincial Council ; Mr. ValentineSmith.M.H.R. fortheHawke's Bay and Wairarapa Districts ; and the Maori Chiefs, E. Puni, William Tako, and Manihera te Ngatoro. Dr. Welch filled the Vice-Chair. With some difficulty we have procured a copy of the "Spectator" containing the report of the speches, but they are far too voluminous for us to give the most meagre outline of them. We observe little else of public importance. The papers contain additional details of Indian cruelty, and full particulars of the loss of the Catherine Adamson, within Sydney Heads. Ere long, we trust to have more room for extracts of general interest.
