LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

The Overland Mail. — The Overland Mail from Auckland arrived here on Monday morning, and departed again on Wednesday afternoon. To whatever cause ascribable, the physique of the mail — to use a somewhat anamolous expression — is getting " small by degrees and beautifully less." The first trip it consisted of four men, the second of three, the third of two, and the fourth of one old man. In this matter we write feelingly, for we find that nearly one half of the Heralds were this time left behind — one tolerably filled bag, containing 61 letters and 50 papers, being all, seemingly, that the bearer could take. Registry Office. — For the convenience of up-country settlers, a book will, in future, be kept in the office of the "Herald," for the purpose of registering the names of servants wanting employment, and the wants of employers with regard to labour. A nominal fee will be charged for the entry, which will include the insertion of the particular item in a general advertisement. Should this means of procuring labour be generally taken advantage of by settlers, the proprietor of the Herald will endeavour to satisfy the demand, not only by publishing the state of the labour market, but by making inquiry on, the arrival of vessels, and adopting such other means as may, from time to lime, suggest themselves.'
