THE HAWSE'S BAY HERALD. Napier, Saturday, Oct. 24, 1857. SUPERINTENDENCY ELECTION.
The intelligence brought overland that Dr. Welch, the candidate for the Superintendency in opposition to Dr. Feathers ton had secured a large party in Wellington, and, in the absence of any knowledge of Dr. Welch or his opinions, that his right hand man was Mr. Wakeiield, whose cry is the downfall of the run-holding interest, imparted to the late election a degree of excitement, which we do not think would otherwise havebcen created. It will be seen that a comparatively large number of electors — 71 in all, came to the poll, including not merely the supporters of Dr. Featherston's Government, but very many who have been its active and persevering opponents. For however much some may feel the negle ;t v» ivh which the District has been treated, and feel disposed, in consequence, to mark, at the poll, their sense of the same ; no one can forget that to the pastoral interest Ahuriri owes its present unexampled prosperity, and few feel inclined, when that interest is so unscrupulously assailed as it has recently been, to withhold their vote in its defence. We subjoin the state of the poll, as declared by the Deputy Returning Officer, at Napier, on Wednesday, the 21st. inst: — Polled at Napier. — Featherston 21 Welch none Patangata. — Featherston .....* 7 Welch none Ruataniwha. — Featherston ... c 14 Welch .....none Waikavi.-~ Featherston 2 Welch 1 Clive. — Featherston 14 Welch none Waipukurau. — - Featherston 7 Welch none Petane. — Featherston 5 Welch none Total. Featherston...... 70 Welch 1 Maj ority for Featherston ...... 69 The arrival of the Wonga Wonga has placed us in possession of the state of the poll at Wellington : for Featherston, 292 ; Welch, 268, majority for Featherston, 24. We are informed, however, that of the actual City votes, Dr. Welch had a clear majority of 13, and moreover, that the influence of his party will prove sufficient to command a majority in the Council. We defer comment until the issue of our supplement.
